Rimmers are an easy way to add visual appeal and an added layer of flavor to your glass. You're most commonly used to it when they ask if you want salt with your margarita. They can be sweet, savory, spicy, bitter ... you name it. And you don't need pricey equipment to do it. A shallow bowl, some sticky liquid, and a flavorful (or colorful) powder are the only things you need.
How to make the glass sticky:
Cut a wedge of citrus and rub around the lip of the glass
Combine a little water with some honey, sugar, or agave. Dip a paper towel in the mixture and rub around the lip of the glass. Make sure the towel isn't too wet or the liquid will dribble down the sides and make a mess
Rimmer ideas:
1 part cinnamon, 1 part sugar (pairs with cider margarita)
1 part ground rosemary, 3 parts sugar (pairs with a classic gin & tonic)
chili lime margarita salt (make your own or simply buy it from a spice shop. pairs with a lime margarita)
1 part cocoa powder, 1 part sugar (pairs with a chocolate martini)
Plenty of brands, like Stirrings, make pre-made rimmers that you can buy. Or you can just use regular seasonings and mixes in your pantry. What makes a great popcorn topping, can also make an interesting rimmer. Let your imagination run wild.
