Mexican hot chocolate

Updated: Feb 6

In my early twenties, my sister discovered a recipe for this Mexican chocolate cake where you take chocolate cake mix, replace the water in the recipe with Kahlua and add cinnamon. I love love love that cake. This drink is a beverage version of that cake that keeps you warm in the water and makes even the crappiest cocoa from a pouch taste high-end.

Instructions:

Empty 1 pouch dark hot chocolate mix into a mug. Pour 6 oz hot water on top. Add 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1 oz Kahlua and stir. Top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings to make it more decadent.

Notes:

You are welcome to use homemade hot chocolate or any brand of powder. I like Swiss Miss Dark Chocolate just fine, but other brands make it, too. It is said in cooking & bartending that better ingredients make for better food and drink, but the Kahlua will mask mediocre cocoa well enough. Milk can be used in place of water to make the beverage richer if calories are not your concern.

Want to spice it up? Add a pinch of chili powder or ground cayenne.
